Water is one of the essential elements required to ensure everyone the right to “a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family” (Article 25 of The Universal Declaration of Human Rights). The Earth’s water content is about 1.4 billion cubic kilometers, with about 97% being in the global oceans. The history of human kind depends on water, as well as the origin of life itself and, just like the air we breathe, it represents the main source of our survival. The importance of this key element has several forms and implications and has always represented on of the mainstays of economies, social balances and cultural identities of the planet. When water is represented in cinema, it has a deeper impact on public awareness.
