The De Laugier Cultural Centre building, exposed to its namesake square, dates back to Cosimo De’ Medici. The foundations were poured in 1561 to build a convent and a church. The complex was then occupied by Franciscan friars. Subsequently to the annexion of Elba to France, in 1802, it was modified and reconverted into a military base later named after General Cesare De’ Laugier, a Napoleon’s official, hero of Curtatone and Montanara. Today, the De Laugier complex is a cultural and convention center that hosts the municipal library BibliotecaComunaleForesiana, the Historical Archive, the municipal gallery and NelloSanti Theatre, also often used, together with its cloister, for congresses and conventions.
